Notes
The first game, in the first playoffs of the first season is upon us. Portland and Virginia were undoubtedly the best teams this season. With both having line ups filled with allstars, this series wont dissapoint. On the mound was 2 of the best pitchers this season. Mark Mulder will most likely win the pitching award, where as Dontrelle Willis had a good statistical season. Dye and Burroughs got singles, with Willy Mo Pena doubling them in. Zeros were put up for the next 3 and a half innings until Dye homered off of Mulder to cushion the lead, and Gagne came in and held Virginia in the 5th for the win.

Notes
Virginia looked to tie up the series, and have at least one win at home. But Portland was hot, after an ace like performance by Willis, Waetcher didn't disapoint either. Looper had strikeouts everywhere. He threw 5 Ks, but the thing is he gave up 5 hits. 3 were home runs. While on the flip side, Virginia only got 3 hits. Waechter didn't allow a hit for 11 strait batters after Aaron Herr hit a single to start the 3rd. Portland is just one win away from clinching the title.

Notes
Portland had a great chance to clinch the championship with one win here, but what followed might be the best game in CBL history. No pitching at all, just hitting. A total of 19 runs were scored, a high for the league. Milton was ousted on Encarancion's 2 run homer, the 5th run given up, but Kurt Ainsworth let it be interesting, and let the first 5 guys on base in the 4th, with Burgos in for the hold. Crosby singled in Byrnes, then Dmitri Young hits a Grand Slam off Burgos. In the bottom of the inning, Matt Anderson gave up two 2 run homers, one to MVP Burroughs, but Tim Spooneybarger came in and held the potent Portland offense to no runs for Virginia's first win of the Taylor Cup

Virginia had to win 3 strait games over Portland. But their offense was struggling as a whole, and Portland was hot. In the bottom of the 1st, Berroa hits a solo homer, then Richie Sexson jacks a grand slam off of Mark Mulder. Virginia had no match for them, because Dontrelle Willis was too strong. All of the scoring plays for the Trappers were off home runs. Willis recorded 4 Ks over 4 innings, which set up Eric Gagne for the save and clinched the Trappers the first championship in CBL history.

End of Season Wrap-Up

So with a successful year down, the playoffs are among us. Virginia, and Portland finished at 9-5 making the playoffs. For the home playoff advantage, the tie breaker went from Season series, which was tied 2-2. Then Virginia had one run more during those games, which was the deciding factor. The playoffs will be one, 5 game series. best of 3 wins.

Orlando, and Austin were left out, but they get draft picks! Austin's offense outside of Greene, and Casey was nothing, while Orlando's offense wasn't any better.

Next season, JUST Omaha will join. They will have an expansion draft after the finals. They will also get the first pick in each round of the draft. After the draft, retirements, and roster moves will be made. For Orlando, Garciaparra and Delgado are retiring, causing them to rebuild. But they can fill the spots after Omaha picks their team.

2 added pitchers will be added for the longer season 2. A new Starting pitcher, and relief pitcher will be drafted and included.

Austin also has some new logos, so their bad past stays behind.

Notes
Austin was looking to avoid a terrible 10 loss season, but Portland was hungry for a win. Victor Zambrano had the worst record in the league, but he just doesn't have an offense to back him up. He pitched a stellar game normally, but Doug Waechter did also. Both held the other team down, and it was 3-3 going into the bottom of the 5th. Austin had 3 solo shots, while Portland just had small bursts of offense. First batter in the bottom half of the 5th, Willy Mo Pena sends the Trapper fans home happy, with his walk off home run.

Chuck James was one of the few bright spots in the M's season. But Braden Looper wanted none of that! James went out and threw a 3 hit shut out to stick it to Looper. Looper gave up 5 runs in 4 innings, including 4 hits in the first 4 batters, then a 3 run home run to 9th Batter, Juan Francia. Looper and the Bums have one thing over James and the M's, they made the playoffs!

Notes
Somewhat of a throw away game for both sides here. But from a statistical standpoint, a huge game. 4 possible MVPs were up head to head. Sean Burroughs and Juan Encarnacion went a combined 0-4, but on the flip side Khalil Greene and Sean Casey went 3-4. But this game came down to pitching. Sidney Ponson needed a good outing just to show the haters. He went out and threw a complete game, one hit shut out. The one hit was a single, which Jermaine Dye got in the third.

Mark Mulder had one more chance to go for the Pitching award, yet to be named. Elarton and Mulder went mano y mano giving up one run up each in the first four innings pitched. Then, Scott Elarton walked Eric Byrnes, and threw a fat one to Hank Blalock who hit it out for his 4th home run of the season. Matt Anderson came in and shut it down for a save.

Notes
This was the first 6 inning game since the 2-0 pitching duel in Virginia in the second game of the season. Bobby Bradley was rolling to a win, up 5-0 with big time hits from Austin hitters. Then in the bottom of the 4th, Portland scored 4 runs to get within striking distance. Burgos shut down the Roughneck's offense in time for normally stellar Chad Bradford to give up one run in the bottom of the 5th to tie, then an rbi single to Angel Berroa for the win. Juan Encarnacion's 11 game hit streak also ended.

With Portland clinching the playoffs, they need a dance partner. Virginia would have to win just one game to clinch, while the M's needed to sweep. It looked great when Shawn Chacon pitched his brains out to only have a one hitter when he was pulled for the save for Dewon Brazelton. He gave up 3 runs on 4 hits to get the loss, and Milton the win. Matt Anderson recorded his league leading 5th save.

Notes
Maybe, just maybe Austin can pull off a 4 game streak and end at 7-7 and in the playoffs with some help. Well, it didn't. Into the 3rd with a 2-0 deficit, Victor Zambrano gave up 5 runs, and back to back to BACK home runs. 3 home runs in a row, which led him to the end his game. Yan and Bradford came in just to stop the bleeding. Yan gave up 4 runs in the 4th, to make the score 11-1. Gagne gave up two meaningless hits and Greene scored on a Sean Casey triple.

If the Beach Bums won this game, the Taylor Cup would be set, and the only battle would be between Portland and Virginia for the home field advantage. It looked great, Braden looper had 6 Ks in his innings and was up 4-1 over the M's. Then they came back, two runs in the 4th, then loaded the bases in the 5th on Tim Spooneybarger. And then, the most anticlimactic ending possible, a walk off walk. M's still have a chance!

1. Virginia Beach Bums
One of the two sweeps this past series, the Bums are probably the strongest all around team in the league. The Bums' 3 starters are featured on the pitching stats sidebar. Though Doug Mientkiewicz hasn't been putting up stats like earlier, but the rest of the team has picked up their game.

2. Portland Trappers
Three strait wins, all thanks to the hitting. I'd say the best offense in the league. The tag team of Sean Burroughs, and Juan Encarnacion are getting things done. If your 3 and 4 hitters are leading the league in hits, you're going to win some games.

3. Orlando Majestics
This team is up and down. Nomar Garciaparra and Carlos Delgado aren't on their game every game. Ben Grieve has been the best hitter, but he is batting lead off so not that many RBIs are had. Scott Elarton is not pitching like a one starter. The team relies on Chuck James every third game, but the offense has to get in sync. On games James has started, the M's are 1-2. One game was a 0-0 game until the 6th when Dewon Brazelton gave up a home run FTL.

4. Austin Roughnecks
This team is just not doing anything right. The tools are there, but nearly everyone is under performing. Sean Casey, Elijah Dukes, and Khalil Green are hitting, but it's a team effort. Eric Munson has started to hit, but Preston Wilson is hitting worse than everyone, and he's a 3 point hitter. Sidney Ponson is also struggling in his 4 starts. I think if this team got a good pitcher, and maybe a new outfielder... They could be challenging for the Cup this year.

Game 10

Notes
As Orlando tries to even up their record at 5-5, Portland wants to take a commanding lead. Juan Encarnacion helps in getting some runs by hitting a home run, but Orlando was in the game going into the 5th. In the top of the inning, Dewon Brazelton couldn't get anyone out. In the first 8 batters of the inning, he got one out and left with 5 ER and 5 walks. Boof Bonser came in and gave up Encarnacion's second home run of the game. Orlando is finally coming down to earth.

Austin still technically had a chance to have a winning season, all they needed was 5 wins to end the season. But first, they had to beat Virginia, who is on a roll. Eric Byrnes, and Hank Blalock hit 3 home runs between the two of them to lift the team to victory. Austin just couldn't get to Mark Mulder while they still had a chance. Virginia is now 7-3 this season, and has all but assured a playoff spot.

Notes
An ugly, ugly game all around. At first it seemed like it would be a good game. Going into the third, the score was 4-3 M's in the lead. With Shawn Chacon still in the game, he implodes, and gives up 6 earned runs in the inning. Six of the first seven batters in the inning got on base, then was capped off by Marcus Giles' 2-run homw run.

1. Orlando Majestics
The team with the least total points for players(52, other 3 are 53) pulled off a 3-1 series win. 2 of the 3 M's losses were pitchers duels that could have been a win in their favor. It's surprising that this team is at the top, but hey. Whatever works, man.

2. Virginia Beach Bums
This team could have ran away and hid from the rest of the league. They split the 4 game series against Portland, 2-2. Doug Mientkiewicz has all but locked up MVP, and their pitching staff has to be the best in the league. Mark Mulder could easily be the best pitcher in the league.

3. Portland Trappers
Portland is shaky, but still earned a split in the series against highly regarded Virginia. Dontrelle Willis has pitched good enough to win 3 games, but has a bad record at 1-2. Juan Encarnacion, and Sean Burroughs is helping the cause by being consistant in hitting.

4. Austin Roughnecks
A team that isn't performing like what it should. Their hitting should be a lot better than what it is. Preston Wilson is hitting at an awful, awful .077. Hopefully this team can come alive with the big win from Sidney Ponson.

Notes
2 of the 3 best pitchers in the league this year face off in the last game of the series. Dontrelle Willis, and Mark Mulder are 2 of only 3 starters that are on the stat bar in Wins, ERA, and Ks. What seemed to be a pitching match up started with a 4 run inning by Virginia. After that, the offenses were ceased and turned into a pitching dual. Willis pitched good enough to win, but not enough as the Beach Bums take it 4-0.

Notes
After being 1-3 on the season after game one, Portland was looking to pull back to .500. It looked bad at first when Eric Byrnes tripled to score Adam Everett, then MVP candidate Doug Mientkiewicz Doubled in Toby Hall to bring the score to 3-0 in the top of the first. Then, in the bottom of the first, Jermaine Dye hits a home run. Bases get loaded with 3 singles, then a walk brings home Sean Burroughs. Juan Encarnacion, one of the best players in the league, hits a Grand Slam, to bring it to 6-3 Portland. No runs were scored in the remainder of the game.

Both teams scored 2 runs in the first, then in the second Carlos Delgado doubled home two runs. In the 4th, Orlando up 4 runs, Shawn Chacon headed out to the mound to pitch one more inning. 3 of the first 4 batters got on, then Sean Casey belted a home run out. That tied up the game. Orlando fought off the Roughnecks with Delgado doubling home another run in the top of the inning to win.

Omaha Expansion Team Announced

Omaha, NE
The CBL announced today that Omaha, Nebraska would get an expansion team next season. "The league is trying to expand to new markets, and Omaha is rich in baseball history." The season would be played at Rosenblatt Stadium, then starting in April, the home games will be played at the new stadium downtown.

The team will be called the Omaha Cyclones, for Omaha's history of tornado disasters. "Tornados are a moving force, which the team will be someday. So I'm in favor of the team name" local resident Ben Matukewicz said at the logo unveiling. The colours will be Black and Yellow, which no team in the league uses. The Black is for the colour of tornados, then yellow for the corn grown in the state of Nebraska. The primary features an O with a tornado formed in the middle. The whole set can be seen here.

Notes
Braden Looper's first start since his fantastic start to the season last appearance. He loaded the bases in the first two innings, then gave up a 2 run home run to Randall Simon, then was later pulled two batters later. On the flip side, Doug Waetcher matched everything Looper did. It came down to the relief pitchers at the end, with Tim Spooneybarger giving up a home run to Sean Burroughs and Willy Mo Pena. Doug Mientkiewicz also homered his 5th one of the season.

What was stacked up to be a pitchers duel, didn't disappoint. No runs were given up in the first, until Doug Mientkiewicz continued his MVP push by hitting his 4th home run with 2 runners on. Dontrelle Willis was solid all game, even though he gave up 4 runs. The Beach Bums left Mulder in to pitch the 5th, when struggling Jeremy Brown got his first hit of the year with a 2 run home run. Matt Anderson came into the game to record his first save of the year.

1. Virginia Beach Bums
From what I've seen, by far the best team in the league. Winning the last two games against Orlando. The only loss was by one run, which says a lot in this league. Their three starters are in the top 5 of strike outs, and Braden Looper had the best start in league history. Doug Mientkiewicz is tearing it up, and is the early MVP favorite.

2. Austin Roughnecks
Austin was beat down in game one of the season, but also have won 2 strait. In the third game, Austin scored 4 runs in the 5th to win it. Khalil Green, and Sean Casey also lead the league in batting.

3. Portland Trappers
This team could easily be 2-1. They blew a large lead last game against Austin. This team still is really deep. Dontrelle Willis as a first starter helps, and their strong roster. Trappers are all over the batting stats.

4. Orlando Majestics
The weakest team in the league, but still can fight. Their offense disappointed them in game 2 against Virginia. Nomar Garciaparra is carrying this team, but Nomar and Delgado are gone after this season. This team may be in trouble.

Notes
What looked like a promising start for Orlando, quickly turned into a nightmare. New signing Shawn Chacon gave up 5 runs in the first making him own the record for the shortest start by a starting pitcher. Doug Mientkiewicz hit his 3rd home run in 3 games to oust Chacon in his first start. Down 9-2, Orlando scores 3 in the top of the 5th to start a comeback, but Tim Spooneybarger comes in for the first save.

The Trappers broke out in the first inning on a Richie Sexson 3 run blast. Khalil Greene continued his hit streak by getting a triple, then later scoring on a Rocco Baldelli double. The Trappers had this one in hand after 2 more runs were scored in the second. Bradford was put in replacing Bobby Bradley, and threw 2 scoreless innings. That set up the Roughnecks to have a chance after Eric Munson hits a 2 run home run. Esteban Yan holds the Trappers to one run in the top of the 5th. Andy Cannizaro hits a lead off home run off Ainsworth, who was going for a complete game. Rocco Baldelli hits his second home run of the year to tie it up at 6. Ambiorx Burgos first appearance was a fast one. Sean Casey hits a double, followed by Damian Rolls' first hit of the year. A game winning triple caps off a 4 run 5th inning for the win.

This game opened with a bang. In the bottom of the first, Austin homered 3 times. Marcus Giles hit a home run to start the second inning. In the bottom of the third Khalil Greene walked, then Rocco Baldelli hit a moon shot. That was it for Doug Waechter, bringing in Eric Gagne for the first time this season. He got all 5 batters out he faced, which was not enough.

Plans for Season 2

Season 2 will have some changes. I've decided to go more in depth with this. First off once a player reaches the age of 37, they automatically retire. So once you lose players, you gain players through the new prospect draft. Each player will have potential points. It takes 2 seasons on the reserves list(continue reading) to gain full potential, except for first round picks, which take 1. Players start off one point less than their potential. Players can be brought up immediately, but will never get to their full potential unless they earn it. The reserve list will be 5 players on each team, not on the actual team. It's for players to replace struggling players, and prospects.

Also, Shawn Chacon was added to the Majestics roster replacing Joe Kennedy, due to the fact Joe Kennedy is dead. I messed up on that. Chacon will be the 3rd starter on the M's this season.

Notes
A back and forth game between the Season 1 favorite Virginia, and the team with the least amount of player points(Orlando). Matt Anderson gave up 3 big runs in the top of the 5th, but Boof Bonser loaded the bases with one out in the bottom half of the inning. A triple was called back, and Bonser got the last 2 batters out.

Notes
The Trappers got out early on an RBI double by Marcus Giles in the first inning. Dontrelle Willis was on his game, and rolled through the Austin roster. In the 3rd, Sidney Ponson threw a meatball to late signing Willy Mo Pena who blasted it for a grand slam. Chad Bradford came in and held the Trappers to no runs in the 2 2/3s in relief, but it was too late.
